What the Repair Takes
A maintenance visit on a door this age starts with the spring and cable, since that's what's usually closest to failing. We check torsion spring wind and look for rust pitting, because a spring with pitted coils can snap without warning even if it still looks intact. From there it's rollers - steel rollers from the 1960s and '70s era wear grooves into the track over the years, and that groove is what causes the grinding you hear on a cold morning. We check the opener's force settings, the safety reversal, and the weatherstripping, since a lot of these doors were fitted before insulation standards caught up with the local climate. If a part is original and still functional, we service it rather than replace it. If a spring is pitted or a cable is fraying, that's a straight swap, not a patch.
How Long It Takes
Most maintenance visits on a single door run under an hour once we're on site - lubrication, hardware inspection, track alignment, and a balance check don't take long on their own. Where it stretches is when the original 1969 hardware needs a part swapped mid-visit: a pitted spring or a cracked roller means we're doing a repair inside a maintenance call, and that adds time. We don't pad the visit with upsells. If the door's original hardware is sound, we tell you so and move on.
Parts We Carry
We carry torsion springs sized for standard single and double residential doors, steel and nylon rollers, galvanized lift cable, and standard weatherstrip and bottom seal. What we don't stock on the truck is anything custom - odd-width doors or decorative hardware from a specific builder run - and if that's what your door needs, there's a lead time on ordering it. We'll tell you that up front rather than have you wait on a truck that isn't carrying the part.
